Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt is one of the best books I have read, and I don't say that about many books. It was unique, captivating, relatable, and so especially worth coming back to again and again until I read the last page (regrettably). Yes, I will read it again and recommend it to everyone I know.
And to think I almost didn't pick up the book because I thought it was going to be strange and a bit 'out there.' Boy, was I wrong and I am so glad I was. This would have been an enjoyment that I might have missed out on.
Summary
In the book, Tova Sullivan, who is the main character, works the night shift at a local aquarium. While cleaning the aquarium, she becomes fond of the resident Giant Pacific Octopus Marcellus; in fact, she is drawn to him. Both characters will have you mesmerized from the time you start the book until the very last page that you read. I happened to be especially fond of the local grocery store owner, Ethan, who is as compelling as the main character, Tova. He is a good man with such a relatable story and a patient heart. All three characters will grasp the 'key' to your heart before you put the book down.
As Shelby's debut novel, I absolutely cannot wait for her to write another as I will surely purchase the next one and the one after that. Bravo, Shelby Van Pelt!
